CBD During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Some recent studies confirm the potential CBD has in relieving pain, fighting stress and easing anxiety. This might make us think that CBD could actually be a lifesaver for pregnant women who often experience cramps, nausea, fatigue and other unpleasant symptoms. But what do the studies say about CBD during pregnancy and breastfeeding? Find the answer in today’s article.
CBD during pregnancy
CBD or cannabidiol is a chemical compound derived from the cannabis plant. Since CBD is derived from cannabis plants, there is a concern about THC and CBD compounds affecting a fetus or breastfeeding newborn. A number of studies demonstrate that the systematic use of heavy marijuana (rich with THC) can seriously affect the adolescent brain and negatively impact its cognitive activity.
A clinical study by a team of scientists from the University of Minnesota researched CBD use during pregnancy and proved to be extremely challenging and limited due to various factors like hormonal changes and women’s vulnerability during the period of pregnancy. Therefore, at this point in time, groups of scientists are examining the effects of CBD on pregnancy among mammals. They have found that the possible effects of CBD during pregnancy persisted, although the offspring were not directly exposed in adulthood. Maternal CBD treatment altered gene regulation labels (DNA methylation) in hundreds of genes in the brains of adult women. In addition, these genes have been implicated in the formation of new neurons and synapses, communication between neurons, and diseases such as autism spectrum disorder, epilepsy, and substance use disorder.
CBD during breastfeeding
It is thanks to their mother that a breastfed child gets the vital nutrients and vitamins they need for healthy development. Due to the significant involvement of the endocannabinoid system in pre- and post-natal development, of course, there are legitimate concerns about introducing phytocannabinoids into the fragile system. With that said, in one of our previous articles, we explained CBD interaction with the endocannabinoid system, which may turn out to be the key interaction of CBD with our body, influencing mood, memory and other important cognitive processes. Also, it is important to note the difference between cannabinoids produced by the body and those received through products. Mother’s milk doesn’t allow the chance for overdose.
FDA experts believe that the components of CBD oils, even THC-free ones, can be transmitted to the baby through breast milk. Besides, CBD products purchased from untrustworthy brands may contain pesticides or bacteria that may have a negative impact on both the mother’s and baby’s health.
Actually, nowadays, the main problem with CBD-breastfeeding interaction is a lack of studies related to the possible effects of the cannabinoid on the process.
