Meeting the Marry Jane Team: Interview with Camila Maria Alvarez (Part 1)

This Monday, let’s start the week with new acquaintances. We would like to welcome you to our next edition of interviews with members of the Marry Jane team. Today, we’re talking to Camila Maria Alvarez, the Quality Manager of the company. In the first installment of the interview, Camila will introduce herself, outline her work routine and tell us about how she ended up in the CBD industry and as part of the Marry Jane team in particular, as well as about the exciting aspects of a quality manager’s work at Marry Jane.

Camila, traditionally, we start our interviews with some personal background. Can you tell us about yourself? Where are you from, where did you grow up, and what did you study?

I was born in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, where I have spent most of my life. There I did my bachelor study in environmental science and took a course as an internal auditor for ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001 in a Swiss certification company (SGS). While working in Colombia as an environmental consultant I met a German guy and after a couple of months I made the decision to come with him to Zurich. There, I did a master degree in environmental science at the ETH.

Do you remember the first time you heard about CBD? Could you have ever imagined that you’d end up working in the CBD industry?

Yes, the first time I heard about CBD was when I started working at Marry Jane. I couldn’t have imagined myself working in the industry until I started working here.

And let’s move on to Marry Jane in particular. How did you hear about the company? When was it?

Well, it was in April 2018. After finishing the masters, I was walking around the streets of Zurich when I saw a poster of a CBD exposition taking place on 4/20 (April 20). As I did not have much to do, I decided to go just as a matter of curiosity. A guy at Marry Jane’s stand gave me a quite interesting introduction to the CBD world and to the company itself. That person made me very curious to know more about this wonderful plant. By coincidence, recently, he had spent some time in Colombia, and he was very interested in the country and the development of the CBD industry itself.

How long have you been working for the company?

A couple of months after this CBD exposition in Zurich, I contacted this guy again and told him I was searching for a job. I explained to him that I did not have any experience as a quality manager in the CBD business, but I had a lot of motivation to learn something new. We met again in October 2018 and since then I am at Marry Jane.

Let’s talk about the working process of a quality manager at Marry Jane. What do you do during your workday? Can you describe your daily working routine to us?

It is a very dynamic job. Most of the time I am building up new processes and implementing new operational systems with my colleagues. Another important part of the job is related to product documentation and legal compliance for a wide range of products according to the constantly changing regulations in the world. I also spend some time dealing with customers’ inquiries about quality and compliance, and solving a lot of problems – which is an intrinsic part of being part of a new born company. In general, I have to say it is a very dynamic and interesting working routine.

What is the most exciting part of your work?

Well, there are many exciting things in my job. Firstly, being part of a new industry with constantly changing rules and regulations. This makes it very challenging but also exciting. Then, being part of a young team and having the opportunity to think “out of the box”.

This is the end of the first installment of our interview. Stick with us to read the second part, which will be published on our blog, and don’t miss any of our other informative articles about CBD and CBD-related topics.
