The cannabis plant has been known for thousands of years and has been used in various cultures and for different purposes. However, there are some myths and misunderstandings surrounding cannabis. In this article, we dispel a few of the most common myths and shed some light on the subject.

Myth 1: "Cannabis is addictive and a gateway to harder drugs"

Fact: The question of addiction is extremely complex. Studies show that cannabis is by no means addictive in the same way as substances such as heroin or cocaine. Although cannabis can lead to psychological dependence, physical dependence is much less common in most users. Only a small percentage develop a problematic relationship with the plant. The "gateway drug theory" has also been disproved: Most cannabis users do not switch to harder drugs.

Myth 2: "Cannabis is only for getting high"

Fact: This is false. The medical effects of cannabis are scientifically proven and recognized. According to research, the cannabinoids THC and CBD in particular have positive effects on chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and nausea during chemotherapy. Its use as medicinal cannabis has been permitted for years in many countries, including Germany, and is dispensed to patients.

Myth 3: "Cannabis is exclusively an intoxicant"

Fact: While cannabis is often associated with recreational use and a "high", it also has a high cultural and ritual value in many cultures. In some traditional societies, such as India and Nepal, cannabis has been used for centuries for spiritual and ceremonial purposes. In addition, non-intoxicating cannabinoids such as CBD are gaining in importance worldwide as everyday companions without producing a psychoactive effect.

Myth 4: "Cannabis weakens the immune system and makes you ill"

Fact: This statement is incorrect. While the abuse of cannabis (as well as other substances) can have negative effects on health, recent studies suggest that cannabinoids can actually support the immune system - especially in cases of chronic inflammation. Used in moderation and under medical supervision, cannabis can have positive effects on immune function and general well-being.

Myth 5: "Cannabis lowers performance and motivation"

Fact: The image of the unmotivated "stoner" is widespread, but by no means always true. Scientifically, the relationship between cannabis and motivation is complex: while very high doses of THC can lead to a lack of motivation in some people, others, including many artists, report increased creativity and concentration. As always, everyone reacts differently and conscious consumption plays a decisive role.

Conclusion: knowledge instead of myths

There are many rumors and prejudices surrounding the topic of cannabis. Inform yourself before you form an opinion - an open approach and correct information are the first step towards better understanding cannabis in society and benefiting from its positive properties.
