Drying cannabis properly - do's & don'ts

Manuel Kalleder|

If you want to get the best results from your cannabis plant, you know that harvesting is just the beginning. The decisive step follows - drying. But how do you do it right? Here you can find out the most important do's and don'ts so that you have the best chance of your cannabis flowers developing their full flavor and effect.

Do: Be patient

The biggest mistake many beginners make is to rush the process. Cannabis needs time to dry evenly. This usually takes between 7 and 10 days, depending on the environmental conditions. Patience really is the key here, as drying too quickly can reduce the quality of the buds.

Don't: Use too much heat

It can be tempting to speed up the drying process with a hairdryer, radiant heater or in the oven, but please don't! High temperatures destroy the sensitive terpenes and cannabinoids in the flowers, resulting in a loss of flavor and potency. Ideally, the drying room should be cool, dark and well ventilated.

Do: Ensure the right humidity

The ideal relative humidity during drying is between 45% and 55%. If it is too high, there is a risk of mold growth. If it is too low, the cannabis will dry too quickly and you will lose valuable active ingredients. It is best to use a hygrometer to constantly monitor the humidity.

Don't: Hang buds too tightly

Make sure that the buds do not hang too close together. There should always be enough air circulating between them to prevent mold. It is best to use strings or drying racks for hanging and allow the flowers to swing slightly.

Do: Ensure good ventilation

Fresh air is crucial. A gentle flow of air prevents moisture from building up on the flowers without drying them out too quickly. Place a fan in the room that moves air indirectly, but avoid pointing the fan directly at the flowers.

Don't: Expose flowers to direct light

Light - especially sunlight - breaks down the cannabinoids that are responsible for the effect of your buds. Darkness is therefore absolutely essential when drying to maintain potency. Also, avoid entering the room too often during drying.

Where is the best place to dry cannabis at home?

The ideal drying room is dark, well ventilated and has a constant temperature between 18-22°C. A cellar or a darkened room is ideal, as they usually have stable conditions. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms or attics, as the humidity in these areas is often too high or too irregular. Rooms that are frequently entered or subject to temperature fluctuations are also unsuitable.

Conclusion:

Drying cannabis properly is an art in itself, which depends on patience, the right conditions and the right room. With these do's and don'ts, you can ensure that your harvest can dry optimally and the yields can develop their full potential. We wish you a good harvest - your Marry Jane team
