Cannabis has been used for various purposes for thousands of years. However, the active ingredients that are always the center of attention are THC and CBD - two of the more than 100 cannabinoids that come from the same plant but have very different effects on the body. While THC is known for its psychoactive properties, CBD's popularity is driven by its calming and non-psychoactive effects. In this article, we explain the main differences and similarities between the two cannabinoids and how they are viewed in cultivation and legally.
THC - the focus is on the high
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is psychoactive and responsible for the typical "high". It binds to CB1 receptors in the brain and influences our consciousness, often with a calming or euphoric effect. These properties make it attractive for recreational use, but THC is also used in medicine to relieve chronic pain and sleep disorders. It is important to note that cannabis in general and THC in particular have a different effect on every body - it is therefore not possible to make overly broad generalizations.
CBD - the gentle all-rounder
CBD (cannabidiol) is the "gentle" partner to THC. It does not have an intoxicating effect, but promotes relaxation and relieves inflammation. Thanks to its non-psychoactive properties, CBD is valued worldwide for numerous health applications, such as the treatment of anxiety or epilepsy. CBD is also well known in cosmetics - for example in skin care in the form of creams and oils.
Shared power - the entourage effect
Although THC and CBD work differently, together with the terpenes of the cannabis plant they develop the so-called entourage effect. CBD can mitigate the undesirable side effects of THC, such as feelings of anxiety. Many medical preparations use this synergy to better serve individual needs.
Cannabis cultivation: what growers need to consider
For cultivation, the objective - THC or CBD - makes little difference. The plant is actually cultivated in the same way. If there are minor differences, it is, for example, that THC-rich plants require somewhat more intensive care and strict light cycles to achieve high THC levels. CBD-rich plants are often more robust and require less effort.
Legal changes since April 1, 2024
The legal situation for cannabis in Germany changed fundamentally on April 1, 2024. Cannabis containing THC is now legalized for recreational use under strict conditions. Adults may possess up to 50 grams of cannabis containing THC and grow up to three plants containing THC for their own use. For the cultivation and use of cannabis containing CBD ("industrial hemp"), the Industrial Hemp Liberalization Act (NLG) currently being discussed in politics is expected to bring numerous simplifications and improvements in 2025.
Conclusion:
THC and CBD have their respective advantages, but they also complement each other perfectly. It depends on the consumer and their needs as to which cannabinoid is best suited to them and which mix will have the desired effect.
